On Tuesday night Sunderland-born fashion designer Gareth Pugh appeared ‘in conversation’ with Colin McDowell at Northumbria University. The designer, whose creations have been worn by Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Kylie, studied at the City of Sunderland College before Central St Martin’s.
Pugh, who collaborated with cosmetics company MAC at the end of 2011, discussed everything from his time growing up to who and what inspires him.
When asked about reflecting on his work, Pugh said:”I always hate seeing pictures of my show the next day as they’re never how I see them in my head…If you always remain a little dissatisfied with what you do it drives you to improve yourself.”
Pugh went onto discuss the idea of fashion designers as celebrities, the moral issue of unpaid internships and his love of London. Below he discusses how he met his mentors Rick Owens and Michele Lamy.
