SNK ‘own’ the Arcade Game. No contest. Now, they’re looking to bring 20 of their classics back to life with the release of a new handheld Neo Geo device. It might look like an iPhone (which we may never hear the end of), but with it’s 4.3 inch screen, D-pad, R1/L1 buttons, an AV output and an SD slot (more titles in the offing?), this little thing could be a real hit with gamers everywhere. The device is a licensed product, but there is no news yet on the production of these things – keep an eye out, and we’ll all be playing the classics, hopefully in no time at all.
Check out Alexander Chen’s baroque.me project; using video (and a whole lot of maths and musicology) he’s designed a piece of software which deconstructs Bach’s Cello Suite No.1 Prelude so that the listener/viewer can visualise the piece and gain a new understanding of the composition.
It’s fun, and very very clever.
Chen says: ‘Using the mathematics behind string length and pitch, it came from a simple idea: what if all the notes were drawn as strings? Instead of a stream of classical notation on a page, this interactive project highlights the music’s underlying structure and subtle shifts.’
